Batik & Manik Art Exhibition, a Malaysian cultural exhibition opened in Tallinn recently focusing the artistic heritage of the country through the lens of its diaspora.
The two-month long exhibition organised by the Embassy of Malaysia in Helsinki was inaugurated on June 12 at the Öpik Conference Centre Lobby in Ülemiste City, said the embassy in a press release on Thursday.
Following the welcoming reception in Helsinki in May, the second edition of the exhibition under the Project Synergy hosted by Ülemiste City is the first-ever cultural event of the Malaysian Embassy in Estonia.
Under the theme “Roots, Identity, and Preservation of Art, Culture & Heritage,” the exhibition offers a moving portrayal of diaspora, memory, and belonging, highlighting how Malaysian heritage continues to thrive in new cultural landscapes.
The exhibition brings Malaysian artistry into an innovative urban space where culture, creativity, and community intersect.
The exhibition continues to feature the works of two talented Malaysian artists- Estonia based Ouddhena Eronigca Teern and Finland based Serena Chan.
Ouddhena Eronigca Teern, a Wordy Artist, whose batik paintings explore storytelling through traditional textile art while Serena Chan, whose manik (beadwork) reflects her devotion to preserving cultural identity, one bead at a time.
The Tallinn exhibition began by the welcoming remarks by Charge d’affaires Ariff Ali and the opening was graced by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Malaysia’s Honorary Consul in Estonia, Malaysians living in Estonia, and local art and culture appreciators, all of whom contributed to a meaningful and warm gathering.
The exhibition will remain open to the public at Ülemiste City until 12 August. As a special feature, an Artist Workshop will be held on 26 June, offering a hands-on introduction to batik and beadwork by the artists themselves.
Project Synergy is a cultural diplomacy initiative by the Embassy of Malaysia in Helsinki, in line with the Malaysia MADANI vision. It aims to support Malaysian talents abroad, foster people-to-people connections, and celebrate the diverse identities within our global community.
This milestone event in Tallinn reflects Malaysia’s commitment to deepening relations with Estonia, and we hope to see more such synergies and initiatives emerging from the Malaysian diaspora, not only in Estonia, but also in Finland and Latvia, the three countries under the Embassy’s coverage.
