A lawmaker of the main opposition in the Parliament Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) received a fine for drunk driving.
The lawmaker, Joona Räsänen on Wednesday in a post on his social media platform Facebook disclosed the incident, which took place on April 17.
"I was stopped on Ring Road 1 in Espoo. The precision breathalyzer result was 0.3 mg/l (0.68 per mille), when the limit is 0.22 mg/l (0.5 per mille)," Räsänen wrote, adding that he is "extremely ashamed and sorry for the incident.
He was fined 40 income-linked day, which is about 2,300 euros.
"The act was completely wrong. I immediately accepted the fine I got," said Räsänen, also Chair of the Lohja City Corporation board.
He also announced that he will not seek re-election to the party board or as the Chairperson of SDP Uusimaa unit.
Speaking at a press conference in the afternoon, Räsänen said that that he took alcohol during an evening out with his friend but made a serious wrong judgement when decided to drive, local media reported.
He also said that such incident never happened in the past, reported national broadcaster Yle.
Meanwhile, SDP leader Antti Lindtman said that Räsänen had made a wrong judgement, which should not be happened again.
He said that the party is thinking about further measures in this regard.
