A total of 15 seals were found dead along the shores of the Pellinge islands in Porvoo while four others seals were found dead on islands around Loviisa archipelago during the last weekend, said the City of Porvoo in a press release on Tuesday.
The reason behind the mass deaths of seals could not be known.
The city authority sent one of the dead seals to the Finnish Food Authority laboratory in Oulu for examination.
“We are expecting the results within 1–2 weeks,” said Porvoo City Veterinary Officer Petronella Jansson, adding that the authority will disclose detail about the incident after getting result from the laboratory.
The authority will examine whether the deaths caused by outbreak of any serious disease such as avian influenza.
No case of bird flu or death of large birds were observed in the Porvoo area this summer, the press release added.
The authority also advised the people not to touch any dead seal with bare hand and always to use glove.
