Environmental activists´ demonstration disrupts traffic in Helsinki

The demonstration organised by environmental group Elokapina (Extinction Rebellion Finland) disrupted vehicular movement in Helsinki city centre area on Wednesday for the third consecutive day, police and the Elokapina said.

Meanwhile, police arrested about 50 environmental activists from Mechelinkatu area on Wednesday evening, on the concluding day of the 3-day protest.

Several hundreds of protesters bearing various banners and festoons participated in the demonstration at about 5:00 p.m. like the previous days to press home their demands for stopping excessive logging, protecting biodiversity and reducing funding in anti-environment projects.

They gathered at Senate Square, Pohjoisesplanadi, Lönnrotinkatu and Vanha kirkkopuisto area and blocked the traffic movement on the roads.

Police ordered the protesters to leave the roads but they did not pay heed to the order prompting the law enforcers to arrest dozens of demonstrators from different parts of the city to make the place free for traffic movement, said police.

Police, however, said that the arrested people will be released after interrogation.

Earlier, police arrested at least 163 protesters on Monday and 81 protesters including minors on Tuesday.
