A total of 42 people drowned in Finland so far this year, according to the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Life Saving Association (Suomen Uimaopetus- ja Hengenpelastusliitto-SUH) and police.
The last incident took place on July 5 when a rowing boat capsized in Haapajärvi lake at Nurmes, a municipality under North Karelia region.
Two people drowned in the accident, said police.
Meanwhile, a total of 40 people drowned in the country from January to June this year and the number is three lower compared to the number in the first fist six months of the previous year, said SUH.
In 2025, five people drowned in January, six in February, nine in March, ten in April, two in May and eight in June.
Out of the 40 incidents of drownings in this year, 10 occurred in Southern Finland, two in South western Finland, seven in Eastern Finland, 14 in Western and Inner Finland, five in Northern Finland and two in Lapland.
