Finland for free, secure future for Syrians: FM

Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on Sunday said Finland supports a free and secure future for the Syrian people, based on international law and fundamental rights for everyone.

“Assad’s dictatorship in Syria has fallen. This moment of relief and liberation must not lead to another regime of oppression. Finland supports a free and secure future for the Syrian people, based on international law and fundamental rights for everyone,” Valtonen wrote in a post on her social media platform X after capturing Damascus by Syrian rebels ousting President Bashar al-Assad.

Armed opposition forces seized full control of Damascus on Sunday, ending over five decades of the Assad family rule, reported Xinhua.

The rapid fall of President Bashar al-Assad's government followed an intense rebel offensive spanning less than two weeks. The campaign culminated in the opposition's announcement that Assad had fled the capital and relinquished power.

Later in the day, Russian state media announced that Assad had landed in Moscow, and was granted asylum along with his family.
