Finland, Uzbekistan vow to boost bilateral ties

President Alexander Stubb and his counterpart in Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Friday expressed their interest to intensify bilateral relations between their countries and strengthen cooperation in various sectors.

Stubb met Mirziyoyev in Tashkent on the concluding day of his two-day visit to Uzbekistan and discussed bilateral, regional and global issues, said the Finnish President Office.

The Presidents after the meeting in a joint statement emphasised to expand mutually beneficial collaboration in the political, trade and economic, investment, innovation, tourism, cultural and humanitarian spheres.

They also concluded a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Uzbek – Finnish Business Council.

The new initiatives significantly broaden the basis of cooperation and lay a solid foundation for long-term partnerships across strategic sectors, the Presidents observed.

Acknowledging the growing economic partnership between Uzbekistan and Finland, the Presidents reaffirmed their mutual commitment in exchanging views on promoting ethically sustainable labour mobility within applicable legal frameworks and responding to the needs in respective labour markets.

They also discussed the possibility of concluding a visa-free travel agreement for holders of diplomatic passports, as a step towards facilitating exchanges and strengthening bilateral relations.

Recognising the strategic importance of educational cooperation, they welcomed the ongoing progress in strengthening academic links and underlined Finland’s expertise in modern, child-centered, and play-based education and highlighted that expanding academic exchanges, including within the framework of the Erasmus+ mobility programme, remains an important area for deepening cooperation.

They emphasised the importance of achieving as soon as possible, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
