Finnish company suspected of supplying electronics to Russia

A Finnish company allegedly supplied electronic goods worth about 2.7 million euros to Russia violating sanctions, said Finnish Customs in a press release on Thursday.

The authority is investigating into the incident of supplying different goods including semiconductors, microchips, processors and connectors in 2022–2023 by the company based in Eastern Finland

The company declared its business activities related to wooden art, education and tourism.

According to the documents, the company purchased the goods from the United States, the EU and China and sold to several EU countries and Hong Kong.

Finnish Customs, however, revealed that some of the consignments ended up in other countries. Some of the goods were delivered to Finland and some directly to Russia.

The goods were exported to Russia illegally mainly through the Vaalimaa border crossing point.

According to Customs, there are two main suspects in the case. One of them believed to be living in Russia while the rest one, a dual citizen of Finland and Russia was interrogated.

The person living in Russia is suspected of conducting the practical arrangements and managing the operations of a company based in Finland.

“The preliminary investigation found that the instructions came from the suspect's son, who has served as an officer in the Russian army,” said the head of the investigation, Sanna Kuparinen in the press release, adding that during the search at the home of the suspect a photograph of the man (son of the suspect) wearing a Russian officer's uniform was found.

The son also opened a bank account in Finland where he used the address of a Russian military academy as his address.

Customs is investigating this as a case of aggravated regulatory offence and aggravated tax fraud.

The authority will forward the case to the Eastern Finland Prosecutor's Office for consideration of charges.
