Stubb for greater European investment in defence

President Alexander Stubb on Monday underscored the need for greater European investment in defence and assured Finland´s contribution in this regard.

“We need greater European investment in defence. Finland will play its part, and we expect the same from all Allies,” the President wrote in a post on his social media platform X after holding a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels.

He said that the meeting focused on supporting Ukraine in its defence against Russia’s war of aggression and on strengthening the defence and deterrence of the Alliance.

“Russia will remain a long-standing threat to security and stability of Europe even after the war in Ukraine. NATO and Europe need to continue to bolster their defences to respond to Russian threats,” Stubb added.

The NATO Chief appreciated Finland´s contributions in support of Ukraine and steadfast commitment to the shared security.

“Finland is a highly valued Ally – your membership in NATO strengthens our deterrence and defence & your expertise in the High North is crucial. Thank you for your contributions – including in support of Ukraine – and steadfast commitment to our shared security,” Rutte wrote in a post on his X after the meeting.

Stubb also meet President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister of Belgium Bart De Wever, and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola during his visit to Brussels.

The topics discussed at the meetings included the European and global security environment, development of Europe’s defence and support for Ukraine.
