The police on Monday released the suspect, who assaulted Krista Kiuru, a lawmaker of the of main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP), according to a press release.
The suspect, who earlier admitted his involvement in the attack, told police about the reason behind the assault.
The suspect said that he had been behaving in a disturbing manner. He thought that the victim might have called the police to report about the disturbance, which prompted him to assault the SDP MP.
The attacker also said that the attack was random, not politically motivated.
At the preliminary stage of the investigation, police did not find any political motive in connection with the assault.
Meanwhile, police continued the investigation into the incident to find out more information in this regard.
The attacker suddenly punched long-term serving lawmaker Kiuru, also a former Family Affairs and Social Services Minister at Kaisaniemi Park in Helsinki on December 13 on her way from the parliament building to bring her child from daycare.
Police arrested a 34-year-old man from Vantaa on December 14 for his alleged involvement in the attack.
