Van containing gas cylinders explodes in Helsinki, 2 wounded

Two persons were injured when a van exploded at Mellunkylä area in Helsinki early Monday night, police said in a press release.

The explosion occurred at about 12:20 a.m. when the van containing gas cylinders was parked near the intersection of Untamalantie and Tuhkanummentie roads.

The van caught fire first and triggered the explosions, local media reported quoting rescue service.

Responding to an alarm, police and rescue service people rushed to spot and found that some of the cylinders in the van exploded due to unknown reason.

Two people were injured in the explosion, and they were taken to hospital.

Police, however, did not divulge the identities of the wounded people and details about the damaged van.

They said that there were several gas cylinders in the van, but all of the cylinders were not exploded.

Police are investigating into the incident to find out the treason behind the explosion.

“The police are now investigating whether there is any reason to suspect the incident as a crime,” said lead investigator Tuomas Lindholm in the press release.
