Finland on Friday called for an immediate cessation of the military escalation between Israel and Iran which poses a threat to stability throughout the Middle East.
The President and Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Friday at a meeting discussed Israel’s extensive attacks on Iran, which have also led to counter-attacks by Iran on Israel, said a government press release.
The meeting also discussed the current situation in Israel and Palestine and on the UN conference on the two-state solution to be held on 17–20 June in New York.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen expressed deep concern over the Middle East situation following Israeli attacks on Iran.
“The situation in the Middle East is deeply concerning, and the cycle of military escalation must be brought to an end. Sustainable solutions to the region’s security challenges can only be achieved with political resolutions,” she wrote in a post on her social media platform X.
The Minister also wrote that she was in contact with Finnish Embassy in Tehran on Friday morning.
“The staff are safe, and the Embassy continues to operate normally. There are a few dozen Finnish citizens in Iran. The Embassy has already reached some of them and is working to contact the rest,” Valtonen added.
Early Friday, Israel carried out airstrikes on Tehran and other cities across Iran. Iran also launched retaliatory missile attacks on Israel.
