Finland to sack envoy to Lisbon for improper behaviours to staff

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Wednesday proposed to terminate the Finnish Ambassador to Portugal, Titta Maja-Luoto, said the Ministry in a press release.

Local media reported that the decision was taken following a joint allegation made by eight staff members of the embassy against the Ambassador accusing her of harassment and inappropriate behaviours.

The Ministry, however, said that the termination of the posting is not a sanction under the legislation governing public officials but a measure to ensure that the Embassy’s staff have a favourable working environment.

Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen decided to propose that the President terminate the posting of Ambassador Titta Maja-Luoto as Head of Mission at Finland’s Embassy in Lisbon to ensure that the Embassy remains functional.

The Minister made the decision after consulting the Foreign Ministry’s senior public officials and human resources unit.

The Ministry will immediately start the process to select a new Head of Mission for the Embassy.

The occupational safety and health report filed to the Ministry will be dealt with in a separate process under the legislation governing public officials, said the ministry.

The process will be led by the Ministry's Director of Human Resources.
