Police shoot dead knife-wielding man in Helsinki

A man was killed when police fired gunshot at him at Alppiharju area in Helsinki on Saturday morning, police said.

The incident took place at about 10:00 a.m. when the man equipped with a knife was moving in the stairwell of a house at Kinaporinkatu area.

Responding to an alarm police rushed to the spot and asked the man to surrender the knife, but he did not pay heed to the order and fled to the roof.

At certain stage the man moved toward the police officers despite repeated orders to stop which prompted police to use a taser.

As the man continued to move toward the police, a police officer fired gunshot at him resulting his death on the spot, said police.

Police also said that the behaviour of the man was threatening, and he did not obey the police orders, which forced them to use firearm.

Police, however, did not divulge the identity of the deceased and describe the details situation of using the firearms at the initial stage of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office is investigating into the incident of using firearms by police.
