Support for NATO membership drops in Finland: eva

The support for NATO membership among Finnish people dropped slightly, according to a survey commissioned by the Business and Policy Forum (eva), a thinktank in the country.

The survey conducted in autumn showed that 71 percent of respondents expressed positive attitude towards Finland´s NATO membership and the figure is five percent lower compared the results of the previous survey conducted in last spring.

The ration of respondents who showed a negative view, however, remained unchanged at 10 per cent.

Men showed more positive view toward NATO membership compared to the women while the ration of support varies among the supporters of different political parties.

According to the survey, 77 percent of men supported the membership, which was 65 percent among women.

The support for NATO was highest among the supporters of ruling Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) and lowest among the supporters of Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance).

The supports among the supporters of Kokoomus was 93 percent, Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) was 72 percent, Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) was 77 percent, Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party of Finland) was 76 percent, Vihreä Liitto (Green League) was 63 and Vasemmistoliitto was 37 percent.

Finland became NATO member in April 2023.
